Can You Really Safely Return To The Gym After Lockdown?


If you do make the decision to return to a reopened gym, you’ll probably notice things have changed. 

  • They may limit the number of people who can enter at once (some gyms are requiring appointments).
  • Equipment might be spaced out so people can stay separate. 
  • Common areas that are harder for social distancing, like a locker room or sauna, may be closed. 
  • Disinfectants and cleaners should be more abundant.
  • You might even be required to sign a waiver.

It would be good to find out exactly how your gym has reacted to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Call them before your first trip, and ask them about the bullets above. Also, make sure you specifically ask about what sanitation procedures they have created. 

However, even if the staff of the gym is wiping down all the equipment between each use, it would still be best practice to clean everything you touch before and after use.

Pepper-crusted Salmon with Garlic Chickpeas

30 minutes to prep and cook and serves 4


2 teaspoon black peppercorns
4 salmon fillets, skinned
1 teaspoon paprika
Grated zest and juice 2 limes
1 tablespoon olive oil

For the chickpeas
2 x 400g can of chickpeas
3 tablespoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves to be chopped finely
150ml vegetable stock
130g bag of baby spinach

Heat the oven 190/fan/170C/gas 5. Place the salmon in a ovenproof dish. Crush the peppercorns roughly. Mix with paprika, lime zest and a little sea salt. Brush lightly the salmon with oil, then add the pepper mix. Bake for around 12-15 minutes making sure the salmon thoroughly cooked.

Pour the chickpeas into a colander, rinse thoroughly then drain. Heat the oil in a pan, adding the garlic cooking for 5 minutes without browning. Add chickpeas and stock and ensuring they are warmed through. Crush the chickpeas, then add the spinach and stir well until wilted. Add lime juice, salt, pepper then heat through. Serve with the salmon.

There is a school of thought that we can out exercise a poor diet. It’s a myth that we at 1wishfit want to dispel. Experts are telling us it is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Exercise is not all about working out to break sweat ?. Going out for a walk, a gentle jog, gardening, household chores are ways of keeping yourself active.

More of us are now working from home, a couple tips would be every 15-20 minutes to get up stretch, have a glass of water, or if that’s not possible every hour to stand up and take a 5 minute break.

Onion & Tomato Bake with Goats Cheese
A family meal on a budget which will take 10 minutes to prepare, 45 minutes to cook and bake in one dish.
4 garlic cloves, finely sliced
6 onions, halved keeping the root intact.
2 tablespoon of olive oil 
2 x 400g cans of chopped tomato 
1 teaspoon of sugar
85g white breadcrumb
125g log goats cheese, crumbled
First, heat oven to 220/200c fan/gas 7. Place onions in a steamer and cook for 20 mins, or until tender.
Secondly. Put the olive oil and garlic in a shallow flameproof casserole dish or a large frying pan. Cook gently over a medium heat for around a minute, trying not to colour them. Add the tomatoes, sugar and half a can of water. Simmer for 10 minutes until it becomes thickened, then season. Add the onion halves cut side down in the sauce and simmer for a further 5 minutes.
Thirdly, transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle over the breadcrumbs and goats cheese, then bake for a further 20 minutes, until bubbling and golden.

The avocado has become popular due to its creamy, mild texture and flavour.
Avocados are an excellent source of monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, yet very high in calories because of its high fat content. Half a avocado is equivalent to one portion of your 5 a day and it’s probably a good idea to limit yourself if your managing your weight to only 2 per week.
There are countless recipes with avocado, my particular favourite is with egg on sourdough toast as a snack but I have also used it to make chocolate icing on healthier chocolate cake. It’s also good to add to a salad or mashed to make guacamole.
